David Pearce
They say moving home and having a child are two of the most stressful experiences that one can have. Moving on a whim to the Isle of Colonsay with his wife Liz ― at the time two-weeks pregnant ― David Pearce embraced both.
Born in Yorkshire but raised in the Cambridgeshire Fens, David has been drawing for as long as he can remember. A self-taught pastel artist, he developed a passion for rock-climbing and mountaineering, travelling the world to seek summits in all seasons. Something about being out in the elements and amongst wild places resonated with him, which led to an interest in how people associate with landscapes and the connotations they attach. The kingfisher half-glimpsed in shadow, a foxes’ tracks in fallen snow; the well-worn scar of ten-thousand boots carved through barren moor ― these things inspire feelings as individual to the perceiver as the landscape that envelops them.
Wildlife plays a role in David’s art not as a direct representation of the animal, but rather as an extension of the landscape it inhabits, both mental and physical. When not drawing, David can be found wandering the wild places, seeking personal fulfilment in mountain, forest, moorland and coast.
